Could Your Office Benefit from a First Aid Kit?

December 27, 2021

Does your workplace need a first aid kit? The short answer is “yes, absolutely.” There aren’t many industries that wouldn’t benefit from having a well-stocked first aid kit on the premises. The nature of emergencies is that they can happen anywhere and at any time, so whether you work at a law firm or an advertising agency, it’s important to have proper first aid supplies on hand.

An Office First Aid Kit Allows You to…

Treat injuries while medical help is on the way. For serious injuries that require more attention beyond just a bandage, a first aid kit won’t be enough to provide treatment. However, while you wait for help to arrive, a first aid kit can be used to stop bleeding or provide the injured person pain relief.

Keep emergencies supplies in one place within reach. Seconds matter during an emergency situation. Valuable time that may be wasted trying to hunt down individual first aid supplies can easily be saved with the presence of an office first aid kit.

Protect against infection. Even for a seemingly minor wound, antiseptic should be applied to prevent infection. In addition, a well-stocked first aid kit will have gloves, allowing the person who’s treating the injury to protect themselves against infection.

Promote a culture of safety within your workplace. When employees know their company is committed to their safety, it cultivates a more positive work environment. In addition, investing in professional first aid training for your team further ensures your employees know how to react—and react quickly—in case of an emergency.

Building an Office First Aid Kit

There are plenty of pre-assembled first aid kits, but you may opt to build your own. This allows you to customize your supplies in accordance with what injuries are most common in your workplace. If papercuts are a common concern, buy plenty of bandages; if lifting injuries are a risk, stock your kit with icepacks.

Of course, that doesn’t mean those are the only supplies you should carry. Again, you never know what a medical emergency will entail, so it’s best to be prepared for everything. In addition to a first aid manual, a well-stocked first aid kit should include:

  • Box bandages in various shapes/sizes
  • Gauze pads
  • Medical adhesive tape
  • Gauze roller bandage
  • Antiseptic or other wound cleaning supplies
  • Non-latex gloves
  • Instant ice packs
  • Plastic bags
  • Breathing barrier for CPR
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers

When it comes to emergencies in the workplace, preparedness is key. When people know how to handle a medical emergency, they’re more likely to step in and help the victim.
