Safety Lessons to learn from Scary Movies

September 21, 2019

It’s spooky season! The weather is getting cooler, the leaves are changing and falling at your feet, and pumpkin spice and apple-flavored things are on every shelf. Fall is upon us, which means it’s time to watch all your favorite creepy horror movies. But did you know you can learn a thing or two about safety from scary movies? Horror movies are good for more than just an adrenaline rush. And besides the obvious lessons, like don’t go into the room where the killer is and don’t split up, you can learn something that will help keep you safe.

Don’t go anywhere alone in the dark.

Many a horror movie starts with a young woman walking to her car alone late, late at night, only for her to disappear for days until her body turns up in the river. Be aware of your surroundings and make your personal safety a priority. If you have to go anywhere alone late at night, try to bring someone with you instead, or carry pepper spray.

Be good to Mother Nature.

There are far too many movies about Mother Nature—ginormous snakes, scary sharks, killer dogs—playing a large role in a character’s demise. Add in the number of characters that have tried running through the unfamiliar woods at night and eventually tripped and hurt themselves. Don’t mess with animals; they are more powerful than you. Don’t go into unfamiliar woods or explore nature late at night. You subject yourself to dangerous situations.

Don’t pick up hitchhikers.

You might be trying to do the right thing by picking up a hitchhiker, but chances are it won’t end well. They might be a psychopath, they might be carrying a chainsaw, or they might be running from a serial killer.

Do your cardio.

It’s important to exercise regularly for your own physical well-being, but it’s especially helpful if a chainsaw wielding killer is out to get you. You’ll be happy you ran all those miles.
